Drug Interactions With Diclofenac Sodium (Cont.)

Interactions With Diclofenac Sodium Explained

The following sections provide detailed information on the potentially negative interactions that can occur when diclofenac sodium is taken with other drugs.

Warfarin
If you are taking blood thinners, such as warfarin, while taking diclofenac sodium, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. You healthcare provider may choose to monitor your INR and prothrombin time more frequently and adjust your dosage accordingly. INR and prothrombin time are tests used to measure how well your blood is clotting.

Other Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Using these pain relievers with diclofenac sodium can increase the risk of bleeding. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) products can be safely used, however.

Aspirin
Aspirin and diclofenac sodium can be used together; however, studies have indicated that the risk of stomach ulcers is higher when these medicines are combined. Talk with your healthcare provider about using aspirin and diclofenac sodium together in your particular situation.

ACE Inhibitors
Diclofenac sodium may inhibit the blood pressure-lowering effects of ACE inhibitors. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs to keep this interaction from occurring.

Diuretics
Diclofenac sodium may reduce the activity of diuretics. As a result, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs.

Lithium
Taking diclofenac sodium and lithium together may increase the levels of lithium in your body by decreasing the amount removed by the kidneys. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs and monitor the level of lithium in your blood, depending on your particular situation.
