Diclofenac Sodium/Misoprostol

Diclofenac/misoprostol (Arthrotec®) is a drug licensed for the treatment of symptoms of certain types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is specifically designed for adults who have arthritis and are at risk for developing certain types of ulcers. As a combination product, diclofenac/misoprostol contains two separate medications that work in different ways.

The pain-relieving component of the drug is diclofenac sodium (Voltaren®, Voltaren®-XR), which works to relieve the symptoms of arthritis. The other component is misoprostol (Cytotec®), a prostaglandin that helps reduce the risk of stomach or intestinal ulcers that may develop due to the diclofenac sodium component.

This medication comes in the form of a tablet and is taken two to four times daily. Side effects may include nausea, heartburn, and diarrhea.
