Demerol® (
meperidine hydrochloride) is a prescription narcotic medication used for relieving moderate to severe pain. Some forms of this drug can also be used as an anesthesia, for preoperative sedation, and for pain relief during labor or childbirth. The medication comes in tablet, oral solution, and injection form, and is available in the following strengths:
- 50 mg Demerol tablets
- 100 mg Demerol tablets
- 50 mg per 5 mL oral Demerol solution
- Demerol injection (in various strengths and forms).
Healthcare providers often recommend 50 mg to 100 mg of Demerol for treating pain (every three to four hours as necessary), for preoperative use (30 to 60 minutes before the start of anesthesia), and for use during labor (once pain becomes regular). For children, Demerol dosing is determined by the child's weight.
