What Is Cyclobenzaprine ER Used For?

How Does Cyclobenzaprine ER Work?

Cyclobenzaprine ER works mostly in the brain stem, not in the spinal cord and not directly on the muscles. The medication works only to relieve muscle spasms caused by problems in the muscle; it does not help with muscle spasms caused by problems in the brain or spinal cord.

Cyclobenzaprine ER comes in an extended-release capsule that prolongs the effects of the medication, much longer than regular, short-acting cyclobenzaprine capsules (Flexeril®).

Cyclobenzaprine ER Use in Children

Cyclobenzaprine ER is not approved for use in children. Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using cyclobenzaprine ER in children.

Off-Label Cyclobenzaprine ER Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend cyclobenzaprine ER for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. Sometimes, muscle relaxants are used off-label to help relieve fibromyalgia pain. Occasionally, muscle relaxants are used off-label to help people sleep, although this is not a widely accepted practice.
