Side Effects of Celecoxib

Common Side Effects of Celecoxib

Celecoxib has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, side effects are carefully documented and compared to a group of people who take a placebo ("sugar pill"). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they occur, and how they compare to the group not taking celecoxib. The most common celecoxib side effects included but were not limited to:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) -- in up to 12.5 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 10.5 percent
  • Fever -- up to 9 percent
  • Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 8.8 percent
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (such as the common cold) -- up to 8.1 percent
  • Upper abdominal pain -- up to 8 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 7 percent
  • Cough -- up to 7 percent.

Other common side effects (seen in 2 to 6 percent of people) included but were not limited to:

During clinical studies, rare side effects of celecoxib occurred in less than 2 percent of people taking the drug. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it is difficult to tell whether they were caused by celecoxib or something else. These side effects included but were not limited to:
