Buprenorphine (Buprenex®, Butrans®, Subutex®, Suboxone®) comes in many different forms and is approved for a variety of uses. But what is buprenorphine, specifically?
 
Buprenorphine is an opioid medication that works primarily in the central nervous system. It is used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe pain. It is also approved as a treatment for opioid dependence. This medication comes in many forms, including an injection, tablet, and patch.
 
Your healthcare provider will make a decision as to which form you should use, as well as how much should be used, based on a number of factors. These include:
