What Is Buprenorphine Used For?

Can Children Use Buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine injection is approved for children as young as two years old. Interestingly, children may metabolize buprenorphine faster than adults, and more frequent doses may be necessary. Other forms of buprenorphine are approved for adult use only.

Is Buprenorphine Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for something other than the uses discussed in this article. This is known as an "off-label" use. Using the Butrans patches for opioid dependence would be considered an off-label use, as would using Suboxone or Subutex for pain control. Using any form of buprenorphine for depression treatment would also be an off-label use.
