Avinza Side Effects

Serious Side Effects Seen With Avinza

Some side effects with Avinza, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
  • The urge to take more Avinza than prescribed or for a non-medical purpose (see Avinza Abuse)
  • Confusion
  • Severe constipation
  • Falling or unsteadiness
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Seizures
  • Unusual changes in behavior or mood (including depression)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.

It should be noted that many people develop itching due to morphine (the active ingredient in Avinza) but are not allergic to the medication. Morphine causes a release of histamine, resulting in itching unrelated to any allergy. If you develop itching but no other allergy symptoms, it is unlikely that you are allergic to Avinza. Tell your healthcare provider, though, since there are medications available to help relieve the itching.
