Avinza Drug Interactions

Avinza Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Avinza is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
You must not consume alcohol while taking Avinza. Alcohol interacts with the narcotic component of Avinza (hydrocodone), potentially increasing the risk of serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Even more importantly, alcohol causes the slow-release beads in the Avinza capsules to release morphine too quickly, possibly resulting in an overdose. You must avoid all alcohol (including alcohol in medicines and foods) while taking Avinza.

Alvimopan
Avinza may increase the risk of serious alvimopan side effects. You should not take alvimopan if you have taken Avinza in the past seven days.

Antidepressant Medications
Combining an antidepressant with Avinza could increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Avinza with an antidepressant, as you may need to be monitored more closely and the dose of your medications may need to be adjusted.

Antihistamines
Many antihistamines cause significant drowsiness and can cause serious problems when used in combination with other medications that cause drowsiness, such as Avinza. Check with your healthcare provider before taking Avinza with an antihistamine, including non-prescription antihistamines.

Antipsychotic Medications
Combining an antipsychotic medication with Avinza can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Avinza with an antipsychotic medication.
