Alternative Treatments for Fibromyalgia
When initially diagnosed with fibromyalgia, many people are relieved to finally have an answer. However, this relief often soon turns to frustration, as medication usually does not completely take away symptoms. As a result, many people with fibromyalgia turn to complementary and alternative medicine to add to (or sometimes replace) more traditional forms of treatment.

Alternative Treatments for Fibromyalgia

Say "alternative medicine," and supplements immediately come to mind for most people. Indeed, supplements are often a cornerstone of treatment for people using alternative medicine for fibromyalgia. However, as is almost always the case with supplements, there isn't much evidence to show that they are safe or effective for fibromyalgia treatment, although magnesium and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) show some promise. So be warned: if you choose to try supplements, make sure to buy ones from a reputable manufacturer, and always ask your healthcare provider first. Remember that any supplement potent enough to be effective may also be potent enough to cause serious side effects or drug interactions. Supplements are typically not covered by insurance.
