Abatacept Side Effects

Indigestion, headache, and back pain are some of the most commonly reported side effects of abatacept. These are generally minor and either require no treatment or can be treated easily. However, there are also a number of potentially serious side effects that should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including difficulty breathing, cough, infection, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Abatacept Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with abatacept (Orencia®); however, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects Seen With Abatacept

Some abatacept side effects, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

  • Any infection (even though this is the most common side effect of abatacept, you should always let your healthcare provider know about any infection that you develop while taking the drug)

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, and unexplained swelling.
